Native Plant Identification

ONLINE TRAINING UNIT:

This in-depth unit explores what makes Aotearoa, New Zealand’s native plants so special – from plants that exist nowhere else in the world to the remarkable adaptations that evolved through millions of years of isolation!

You will build a practical understanding of how plants are grouped together, the meanings behind scientific names, as well as develop the skills to recognise key identification features and apply them in the field. You will also gain insights into our threatened plant species — why they matter, how they are classified, the threats they face and what is being done to protect our most vulnerable species.

By the end of this unit, you’ll not only be better equipped with the skills needed to identify native plants, but also to understand their story, their vulnerability, and their critical role in shaping and sustaining Aotearoa New Zealand’s unique landscapes.

Identifying New Zealand Birds

ONLINE TRAINING UNIT:

This training unit is designed not to teach you every species of bird, but instead to teach you how to identify birds.

You will learn how to ID bird sounds by listening to them, determining what pattern each species is using.

You will learn the steps to take to identify birds by sight in the field as well and be encouraged to keep practicing in the field by going out regularly, until you are very comfortable identifying all the birds you see.

Intro to Freshwater Environments

ONLINE TRAINING UNIT:

In this training unit, we will dive into some of Aotearoa’s freshwater habitats and float over the surface to learn about their connection to the land and importance.

By the end of this training unit, you will be able to identify the differences between land and aquatic habitats, define an aquatic habitat, define a catchment and explain why it is important in stream management, explain the generalised format of a stream when it flows from mountains to sea and list five safe practises when working around water.

ONLINE TRAINING UNIT:

In this training unit you will take your learn how to put your identification skills into practice.

You will learn about what types of bird monitoring are done and why, how to conduct a 5 minute bird count, the different issues to be alert for with bird surveys and how to organise and analyse your data.

Conservation Project Management

ONLINE TRAINING UNIT:

This detailed training unit introduces learners to the fundamental stages of project management and applies them in a conservation context. It is designed to be scenario-based, with learners building their knowledge throughout each module.

By the end of the unit, each learner will have developed a draft project plan for a realistic conservation project, as well as demonstrating an understanding of key project management concepts, processes, and tools.
