About Course

This Introduction to Pest Animal Control unit will cover the basic information on pest control protocols in Aotearoa. Participants will gain hands-on skills, critical to setting traps safely and reviewing a pest control line in the field.

This one-day training unit will be held at Ōhope Scenic Reserve on Tuesday 29 September 2026 (9am-4pm).

What Will You Learn?

  • To identify the main mammalian pests in NZ
  • To identify the most common types of traps and what animals they are targeting
  • To understand components to improve trapping success
  • To be able to describe some commonly used toxins and their use
  • To be able to describe the main hazards when working with traps and toxins
  • Understand the importance of results/activity monitoring
  • Gain “real” experience setting and clearing traps at a conservation site
