Native Plant Identification (Oropi, 21 August 2026)

About Course

Native Plant Identification is a one-day training programme introducing the principles and skills used to identify native plants of Aotearoa New Zealand. Participants will explore the unique evolutionary history of New Zealand’s flora, learn the fundamentals of plant taxonomy and scientific naming, examine key diagnostic features used in plant identification, and gain practical experience using keys and other identification resources to identify plant species.

This one-day training unit will be held on Friday, 21 August (9am-4pm) at Oropi in the Bay of Plenty. (Address & full details of the day are available once enrolled.)

This training unit will be run at other sites in the Bay of Plenty throughout the year.

What Will You Learn?

  • How Aotearoa New Zealand’s long isolation led to the evolution of unique plant species and distinctive adaptations.
  • How plants are classified into major plant groups using key characteristics (taxonomy).
  • To interpret a plant's scientific name to identify clues about its features (etymology).
  • To identify five diagnostic plant characteristics used to accurately distinguish between species.
  • To use a dichotomous key and other identification resources to determine the identity of an unknown plant.
