About Course

This Introduction to Pest Animal Control unit will cover the basic information on pest control protocols in Aotearoa. Participants will gain hands-on skills – critical to setting traps safely – and review a pest control line in the field.

This one-day training unit will be held on Thursday 9 April 2026 (9am-4pm) at Kaharoa Forest.* NOTE: This training unit is also being run at other sites in the Bay of Plenty. See listings under ‘Our Training Units’ for further details.

To identify the main mammalian pests in NZ
To identify the most common types of traps and what animals they are targeting
To understand components to improve trapping success
To be able to describe some commonly used toxins and their use
To be able to describe the main hazards when working with traps and toxins
Understand the importance of results/activity monitoring
Gain “real” experience setting and clearing traps at a conservation site
